Govt employees banned from using social media without permission

ISLAMABAD – The federal government has banned it employees from using any social media platform without permission as part of its security measures.

The Establishment Division has issued an office memorandum in this regard. The decision has been made to prevent the disclosure of official information and documents on social media, it said and instructed government employees to adhere to the Government Servants (Conduct) Rules 1964.

The office memorandum added that government employees could not express opinions or make statements on social media without permission. They are also barred from sharing official documents and information with unauthorized individuals and from making statements that could damage the government’s reputation.

According to the memorandum, employees are not allowed to speak on matters that contradict government policies, decisions, national sovereignty, or dignity, nor can they make statements on media that could affect relations with other countries.

The memorandum further pointed out that government employees have been frequently observed engaging in debates on social media.

It clarified that the instructions are not intended to restrict positive use of social media but to regulate its use.

The memorandum also directed institutions to monitor their social media platforms to remove objectionable content, and all services and groups are required to comply with these instructions.

It warned that an action would be taken against the employees if the found involved in violations.
