The IMF mission led by Mr. Nathan Porter, IMF Mission Chief called on the Finance Minister on 13th May, 2024 at the Finance Ministry to kick start the discussions on further engagement with the Fund. The meeting was attended by Governor-State Bank of Pakistan, Chairman-Federal Board of Revenue, and senior officers of the Finance Ministry.

The Finance Minister welcomed the IMF team and thanked them for the successful completion of the Standby Arrangement (SBA). The Finance Minister apprised the IMF team of the improvement in the macro-economic indicators over the course of the SBA and underscored the government’s commitment to continue with and expand upon the reform agenda. As Islamabad eyes a bigger and longer bailout package to stabilise and revive its economy, Pakistan and the International Monetary Fund started talks on Monday not on only Extended Fund Facility but also climate financing.

On the other hand, the two sides have agreed on the important targets set for the upcoming budget, sources say, which includes timely repayment of external debt repayments.

The Washington-based world’s top financial institution is represented by a team led by Nathan Porter, the IMF’s Mission Chief to Pakistan, a process that is expected to take two weeks.
