Save the Children reported that many Afghan families and their children are only surviving on bread and water this Ramadan as the cost of food has doubled across Afghanistan.
Save the Children said that Afghanistan’s economy is near collapse and an increasing number of families are jobless, destitute and are resorting to desperate measures to feed their children.
The report says since the Islamic Emirate’s takeover in August 2021, living costs and food prices have skyrocketed, and it cited World Bank findings saying that incomes are likely to have fallen by around a third in the last months of 2021.Save the Children interviewed Afghan women, who complained over the high price of food, saying they are not able to afford to buy food.
According to the Save the Children, children are the most vulnerable during a hunger crisis. Without enough food and the right nutrition, they can become malnourished which can lead to illness, infections, stunting and death.—TOLO
