LAHORE – The Election Commission stopped several Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf candidates from contesting upcoming elections and landed in court, and in latest development, Supreme Court allowed several leaders of former ruling party to take part in elections.
On Friday, the Supreme Court of Pakistan permitted Elahi to contest in the upcoming general elections.
However, Elahi’s lawyer said that he will only contest elections for the provincial assembly and will not run for the National Assembly.
Earlier, an appeal against rejection of nomination papers was under consideration by 3-member bench. Elahi’s counsel highlighted about the absence of separate accounts for election expenses in each constituency.
The PTI leader, contesting from five constituencies, faced questions about the legality of not opening separate accounts for each, with Justice Athar Minallah explaining the legal requirement.
Among several heavyweights, other PTI candidates Sanam Javed and Shaukat Basra were also cleared to contest elections as the apex court overruled the verdict of Returning Officers (ROs).
With two weeks ahead of the country’s next elections, a division bench of top court directed ECP to publish and print PTI’s candidates in ballot boxes.
On the day of receiving nomination papers, Elahi was surrounded and detained by the police, argued his lawyer.
In previous development, court decided against the decision of election Appellate Tribunal and rejected appeals of several PTI leaders including party’s founder Imran Khan.
