Drains cleaning continues; 4,364 tons sledge removed: NDMA

The cleaning of sewerage drains in Karachi continues on 2nd consecutive day by the teams of National Disasters Management Authority (NDMA) and Frontier Works Organisation (FWO). The large scale cleansing of Karachi nullahsis being carried out and the NDMA and FWO have removed 4,364 tonnes sledge so far from main nullahs. According to spokesman, the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) started cleaning operation was started on Monday. There are 552 big and small nullahs in Karachi. From out of 38 main nullahs, cleansing of 22 nullahs had already been started on emergency basis. The Sindh government had agreed to cleanse 19 nullahs of the city.While FWO had been tasked to remove garbage from Gujjar , Korangi and Moach Goth nullahs. The focus is to remove debris from 21 choked points of these nullahs. Some 24 excavators, two loaders, 90 dumpers and 224 labours are engaged in the cleansing operation. With the help of heavy machinery garbage is being lifted from five spots from sewerage drains, which had choked free flow of the water in the recent rainfall in the city. The garbage from the sewerage drains being transferred to the landfill site. It may be noted that, Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has predicted new spell of monsoon rain in Karachi on Friday and Saturday. NDMA Chairman Lt. General Muhammad Afzal on Sunday in a media briefing in Islamabad had said that NDMA was tasked to clear encroached nullahs in Karachi and asked the federal and the provincial authorities to sit together to resolve the city’s long-standing issues as temporary measures would only subside them rather than solving them permanently.
