The National Institute of Maritime Affairs (NIMA) organized a seminar on the International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) Obligations of Reducing Harmful Emissions at Sea and Pakistan’s Response and Challenges’ on Wednesday.
The speakers while addressing the event called for joint efforts to ensure greener seas and reduce harmful emissions into their waters.
Former DG NIMA, Vice Admiral (R) Abdul Aleem was the Chief Guest on the occasion.
He said that the road to achieve greener shipping in line with IMO GHG Strategy-23 was somewhat challenging but could be achieved by strategic planning and systemic capacity building.
President NIMA, Vice Admiral (R) Ahmed Saeed in his welcome address remarked that in the era of “Climate Emergency,” the responsibility of every sector had increased manifold.
Mr. Camille Bourgeon, Tech. Officer from IMO, London highlighted the need for early ratification of MARPOL Annex VI by Pakistan as it has already ratified the earlier five annexes.
He also assured that the IMO would extend full technical support in this regard. Ms. Alia Shahid, DG Ports & Shipping, MoMA clarified that a roadmap had been chalked out for its ratification in an early time frame.
