THE attack on the Pakistani Consulate in Frankfurt by a group of Afghan nationals is an appalling incident that warrants strong condemnation. Reports and social media videos depict a disturbing scene where Afghan protesters stormed the Consulate, removed the Pakistani flag and attempted to burn it. Such actions not only violate diplomatic sanctity but also reflect a troubling trend of hostility from certain quarters towards Pakistan.
This is not an isolated incident of aggression by Afghans against Pakistanis. Previously, during a cricket match in Sharjah, Afghan fans attacked Pakistani supporters, demonstrating a pattern of hostility that has persisted despite Pakistan’s consistent efforts to foster goodwill and provide support to Afghan refugees. Pakistan has been a steadfast host to millions of Afghan refugees over the decades, offering them refuge, assistance and opportunities for livelihood. However, the gratitude expected from these individuals, especially those now residing in Europe, including Germany, seems to be lacking. Many of them have familial ties or personal histories in Pakistan, yet their actions abroad have been nothing short of disgraceful. The people of Pakistan are understandably distressed by this latest incident. It raises pertinent questions about the future of Afghan nationals currently residing within Pakistan’s borders. Despite the hospitality extended to them, their presence has often been marred by issues ranging from criminal activities to involvement in terrorism, posing serious challenges to local security and stability. It is imperative that the Pakistani government does not overlook this incident. A decisive stance is necessary to safeguard diplomatic missions and ensure the safety of diplomatic personnel worldwide. While the Foreign Office has rightly summoned the German ambassador to protest this attack, it is equally crucial for Germany to take immediate and stringent action against those responsible for vandalizing the Pakistani Consulate in Frankfurt. The passive stance taken by German authorities during the attack is also deeply concerning. Looking ahead, stringent measures must be implemented to prevent such deplorable incidents from recurring. Perpetrators of the attack on Pakistani Consulate must be brought to justice by the German authorities.
