IN the midst of global challenges to democracy, Pakistan’s successful 2024 general election stands as a beacon of hope against the tide of populism. The world, especially leaders like President Biden, should acknowledge and support this achievement, standing alongside figures like General Milley who have defended democratic principles.

The democratic process in Pakistan is in full swing, with major political parties engaging in consultations to form governments. Despite criticisms and petitions in the courts, the country’s media continues to play its vital role in informing the public and fostering democratic discourse. However, challenges remain, particularly in the face of populist threats to elections and governance.

Similar challenges are evident in other democracies, such as the United States and the United Kingdom. The events surrounding the 2020 US presidential elections, including the January 6 insurrection, highlight the urgent need to safeguard democratic institutions. In the UK, the suspension of parliament by Boris Johnson was deemed unlawful by the Supreme Court, signalling the dangers of unchecked executive power. Populist movements are also on the rise in Europe, further emphasizing the global nature of the challenge.

To combat populist threats, governments must adopt a constructive approach that includes measures to devolve power to local governments, combat corruption and ensure accountability of lawmakers. Additionally, steps should be taken to limit the influence of money in politics and hold elected officials accountable for their actions. The consolidation of power in the hands of a few, as proposed by some political factions, poses a grave threat to democratic norms and principles.

The recent legal actions against former President Trump in the United States, including his removal from the ballot by the Colorado State Supreme Court, highlight the importance of accountability for those who seek to undermine democracy. However, the outcome of these legal battles remains uncertain, underscoring the need for continued vigilance and action to protect democratic values.

In the United Kingdom, concerns about democratic erosion extend to issues such as high turnover in the civil service and attacks on judicial independence. Transparency International’s assessment of the country’s corruption index serves as a wake-up call for the government to address these challenges and uphold democratic standards.

Ultimately, the defence of democracy requires collective action and unwavering commitment from leaders and citizens alike. By standing with democracy and rejecting populist rhetoric, leaders like President Biden can help ensure that democratic principles prevail in the face of adversity.
