Austrian Ambassador Ms Andrea Wicke on Thursday honoured Mr. Lucas Woerle, an Austrian mountaineer and paraglider, for his extraordinary bravery and selflessness during a perilous expedition on Broad Peak last summer.
The event was attended by distinguished guests, including diplomats, mountaineering enthusiasts, and Woerle’s family. In her address, Andrea Wicke praised Woerle’s heroic actions, which have garnered global recognition.
Last year on July 15, Lucas Woerle made the extraordinary decision to forego his lifelong dream of paragliding from the summit of Broad Peak to rescue Murtaza Sadpara, a local mountaineer and high-altitude porter, who was in a life-threatening situation near Camp 3 (8047m). “Lucas, your heroism on Broad Peak is a testament to the strength of the human spirit and the profound impact one person can have on the lives of others,” the ambassador remarked. The tourism department of Gilgit-Baltistan has also commended Woerle’s exceptional bravery, describing his actions as setting a new standard of morality and humanity in mountaineering. A statement from the department highlighted that Woerle’s choice to prioritize humanity over personal ambition is a remarkable display of empathy that has set an inspiring precedent for future expeditions.
