THERE is a significant housing crisis in the country, one that has been amplified by rapid population growth, urbanization and the widening gap between demand and supply. The growing pressure on existing infrastructure and the scarcity of affordable housing have made it increasingly difficult for many, especially the working class, to find a home that fits their budget. In the light of this, the directive by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif to expedite the completion of low-cost housing projects is a crucial step. One of the most significant aspects of his directive is the emphasis on working with the private sector to boost investment in the housing market. This is a necessary and forward-thinking approach, as the private sector’s involvement could provide the resources, expertise and innovation needed to tackle the housing deficit more effectively.
However, while the private sector can help meet the demand, there is a pressing need to ensure that the housing solutions developed remain affordable for the common man. It is critical to reconsider the traditional approach of horizontal construction, which requires large amounts of land for low-rise buildings. In urban areas, where land is scarce and valuable, this model is no longer sustainable. Instead, the country should look to vertical construction as a practical solution. High-rise buildings and skyscrapers, which maximize vertical space, can provide housing for a significantly larger number of people within a smaller land area. This approach would allow for the preservation of agricultural land, preventing its encroachment by sprawling urban developments. Furthermore, incorporating modern, energy-efficient technologies in these buildings can help reduce long-term living costs, making them even more accessible to those on limited budgets. Additionally, there is also a need to address the issue of slums, where living conditions are deplorable and basic amenities are often lacking. The housing policy must also address the needs of these marginalized communities, ensuring that they are not left behind in the pursuit of modern housing solutions. Projects that focus on providing dignified, affordable housing for slum dwellers are essential to uplifting these communities and providing them with the opportunity to live with dignity.
