Federal Minister for Maritime Affairs, Qaiser Ahmad Shaikh, stated that political parties have created obstacles to the country’s development, and without addressing the losses of state-owned enterprises, Pakistan cannot move forward. He made these comments while speaking with the officials of Karachi Press Club, where he also mentioned that foreign investments are set to be made at Pakistani ports, which could greatly enhance the country’s maritime trade.
Qaiser Ahmad Shaikh criticized the role of political parties in national development, stating that their actions have posed significant barriers to Pakistan’s progress. He added that the losses of Pakistani state-owned enterprises have exceeded 6 trillion rupees over the last five years, and without addressing these losses, the country’s development is not achievable.
The minister highlighted that foreign companies are about to invest in Pakistani ports, with companies like Maersk Line and Abu Dhabi Ports planning investments totaling $2 billion. Regarding Gwadar, Shaikh mentioned that China holds 90% of the investment in the area, and the government has decided that 60% of public sector imports will be made through Gwadar.
Chairman of Pakistan National Shipping Corporation (PNSC), Sultan Chawla, revealed that they are in the process of purchasing ships from Malaysian shipping lines. He also noted that PNSC’s fleet aims to add one or two ships each year. Karachi Shipyard has been tasked with building a 1,100-container vessel, which is expected to be completed by the end of 2026.
Talks are ongoing with Malaysian shipping companies to enhance business activities through these vessels. The Minister reiterated the commitment to right-sizing rather than downsizing in order to boost national business and trade.
