Inspector General of Police Sindh (IGP) Ghulam Nabi Memon has announced the establishment of “Enforcement Units” in each district of Karachi to tackle the city’s growing traffic issues and ensure strict adherence to traffic laws. During a meeting on traffic-related challenges held on Saturday, IG Sindh emphasized that the personnel of these Enforcement Units will be equipped with body-worn cameras or other surveillance equipment to monitor traffic violations in real-time and enforce laws efficiently.

The Enforcement Units will focus on combating street encroachments, illegal parking, speeding, and wrong-way driving. Additionally, unlicensed drivers will face strict penalties, and cases against habitual offenders will be filed in the form of FIRs. IG Sindh called for an investigation into fatal traffic accidents, comparing their seriousness to murder or serious crimes, and instructed related departments to identify causes and responsible parties. The Traffic SPs must be present on roads during peak hours to immediately clear obstacles and ensure smooth traffic flow. The chief cause of traffic problems, as identified by IG Sindh, is unlicensed and inexperienced drivers on the roads.

He further stressed the importance of ongoing public awareness campaigns to educate the public on the dangers of driving without a license, overspeeding, and taking shortcuts. Wedding halls and their parking practices have been causing traffic disruptions. IG Sindh has called for meetings with wedding hall owners to ensure proper parking systems are established. An ongoing awareness campaign has been running from January 1 to January 9, targeting violations like driving without a license, helmet use, illegal side mirrors, and underage drivers.
