RIYADH — Explosions were heard across parts of Saudi Arabia’s capital as towering columns of black smoke and flames were reported near King Khalid International Airport, triggering fresh alarm in the region amid escalating attacks linked to Yemen’s Houthi movement.

Clips show huge plume of dark smoke rising near the airport, with the airport highway, main terminal and surrounding facilities visible in the background. Flames were also seen rising from behind what appeared to be fuel-storage tanks.

The developments came hours after Saudi Civil Defense issued emergency alerts warning of a potential aerial threat in Riyadh and nearby Al-Kharj. An all-clear was later issued, but reports of explosions and smoke emerged around the capital. A Reuters journalist in Riyadh’s Olaya district reported hearing loud booms before the all-clear.

The incident rapidly raised concerns over aviation operations at one of Saudi Arabia’s busiest airports. Flight-tracking data reported major disruption at King Khalid International Airport, with numerous delays and cancellations and the airport reaching the highest level on Flightradar24’s disruption index.
Reports circulating online have claimed that fuel-storage facilities and other airport infrastructure may have been targeted, with some accounts specifically alleging that two Aramco fuel tanks north of the airport and the cargo area were struck. Those specific damage claims have not been independently confirmed.
Similarly, claims that Riyadh airport runways 15L and 15R were rendered unusable have circulated, but no independent confirmation of those runway reports was immediately available.
Eyewitness accounts described seeing flames and a thick column of black smoke rising in the direction of the airport. Reuters imagery also showed smoke apparently coming from a fuel-storage area at King Khalid International Airport.
Satellite imagery was also reported to show a dark smoke signature near the airport, although satellite detection alone does not establish the cause of the fire or confirm that a particular facility was struck.
The Saudi government’s media office had not immediately provided a detailed explanation of the incident or confirmed the reported damage.
Houthi escalation raises regional tensions
The incident comes amid a renewed escalation between Saudi Arabia and Yemen’s Houthi movement. Reuters reported that the latest alerts were the first such warnings for Riyadh since the current escalation involving the Houthis began in July, although the capital had received alerts earlier this year during the wider regional conflict.
The Houthis have previously claimed attacks against Saudi interests, while Saudi authorities have reported intercepting incoming missiles and drones. The latest developments have once again placed Riyadh’s critical infrastructure and aviation network under heightened security scrutiny.
For now, the precise cause of the explosions, the extent of any damage, possible casualties and whether specific airport or fuel facilities were directly struck remain unclear.
