IN a remarkable achievement, a team of researchers, including Dr. Zubair Khalid from Lahore University of Management Sciences (LUMS), has been awarded the “Nobel Prize of supercomputing.” This prestigious recognition not only highlights the extraordinary talent emerging from Pakistan but also underscores the country’s serious commitment to tackling one of the most urgent global crises — climate change.

Dr Khalid and his team have developed an innovative climate emulator that overcomes the limitations of traditional climate models, which are notoriously slow and data-heavy. By significantly reducing the amount of data needed for simulations and using advanced algorithms, their model offers a faster, more efficient way to predict climate patterns with remarkable accuracy. This is crucial as climate change intensifies extreme weather events like floods, hurricanes and heatwaves — phenomena that are increasingly unpredictable and devastating, especially for vulnerable communities.The significance of this achievement lies not only in the technology but in its potential to reshape global climate forecasting.
