ISLAMABAD –   The Supreme Court Constitutional Bench on Tuesday sought a response from the federal government regarding appearance of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Founder Imran Khan before it on a contempt petition against him.

The Constitutional Bench of the SC heard the government’s petition for contempt of court against Imran Khan during which Imran Khan’s lawyer and an additional attorney general appeared before the court.

The court asked, “Does the government wish to proceed with this petition?”

On it, an additional attorney general submitted that the government seriously wanted the petition to be heard, adding that PTI Founder Imran Khan held a long march on May 25 and violated the court’s orders.

Constitutional Bench head Justice Aminuddin Khan remarked that contempt cases are between the court and the person accused of contempt.

“If the court issues a notice, Imran Khan will have to appear in the courtroom,” remarked the judge, with directives to the law officer to seek instructions from the government regarding his court appearance.

During the hearing, Imran Khan’s lawyer Advocate Salman Akram Raja submitted that a response had already been submitted on behalf of the PTI founder.

However, the court’s verbal order had not reached Imran Khan due to the disruption in mobile services, which prevented communication with the lawyers.

The bench later adjourned the hearing for an indefinite period.

It may be mentioned here that on May 25, 2022, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) conducted a long march toward Islamabad against which the government had approached the court.

Later, after the failure to comply with the court’s orders, the government filed a contempt of court petition against Imran Khan.
