In a bid to join efforts for finding a sustainable solution to municipal waste, the Sindh Solid Waste Management Board (SSWMB) and Engro Energy Limited (EEL) will conduct a joint feasibility study for a 3,000 tons solid waste fuel plant. An MOU was signed here on Friday in presence of Sindh Minister for Local Government Syed Nasir Hussain Shah, Minister Energy Imtiaz Sheikh, Administrator Karachi Barrister Murtaza Wahab, MD SSWMB Zubair Ahmed Channa, CEO Engro Energy Yusuf Siddiqui, and media representatives.
The LG minister termed the MoU as another step ahead towards achievement of “Bilawal’s vision of Clean and Green Karachi”. Minister Energy said that the work on RDF (Refuse-derived fuel) had started previous year and an agreement was also signed for generating electricity from waste. “We are also working on other such projects to ensure better use of waste by recycling,” he added. Speaking on the occasion, Administrator Karachi Barrister Murtaza Wahab said that the Sindh government became the first province of Pakistan to approve a systematic policy of generating energy from waste which allows power generation through recycling of municipal waste. He also acknowledged the role of private institutions for the purpose. MD SSWMB said that modern technology was being used to provide sanitation facilities to the citizens.
As per the agreement, Engro Energy Ltd. will use its skills and technical resources for the completion of the project while SSWMB would provide Engro Energy access to the Jam Chackro Site and the Gond Pass Landfill Site. Besides sharing of all relevant data, SSWMB would provide 10 tons of waste every month for the study.
Yusuf Siddiqui reiterated Engro Energy’s aim to promote environment-friendly energy solutions to one of pressing issues of the country and said “the idea of turning waste into a sustainable fuel is in line with Pakistan’s sustainability targets as pledged in the Nationally Determined Contributions NDC.
