18 killed in Nepal passenger plane crash in Kathmandu

KATHMANDU – Rescue teams have recovered 18 bodies after a passenger plane with 19 people on board crashed at Kathmandu airport in Nepal on Wednesday.

The Sauyra Airlines flight crashed at Tribhuvan International Airport after the plane skidded off the runway within minutes of taking off, a spokesperson of the airport told international media.

The flight was bound to Pokhara when it caught fire around 11 am.

The pilot of the aircraft is the lone survivor and he has been shifted to hospital for treatment. Recues officials and Nepalese army are present on the spot.

The CRJ200 plane, which can carry 50 passengers, slipped off the runway before catching the fire.

Videos circulating on social media show a large fire with plumes of smoke rising near the Tribhuvan International Airport.

In 2023, a Yeti Airlines aircraft crashed on Pokhara, leaving all 72 people on board dead.
