THE people of Pakistan once again expressed their unflinching support to oppressed Kashmiri people by observing black day on Sunday, making it clear to world community that hearts of Kashmiris and Pakistan beat together and come what may, political parties, civil society and other segments of the society are all united for the cause of Kashmir. Several programmes, including rallies and seminars, were organised throughout the country to express solidarity with the people of occupied Kashmir. The message was clear that Pakistan would go to any extent in support of Kashmiri people.
This year’s black day had a special significance. It came at the heels of India’s unilateral steps of August 05 that revoked special status of occupied Kashmir with the aim to change its demographic composition. This blunder of India as well as an effective diplomacy on part of Pakistani government has brought the festering dispute on the international radar like never before. Therefore, this year we understand that observing this black day in Pakistan and Kashmir would not have gone unnoticed at the international level given the precarious situation prevailing in occupied Kashmir where eight million people have been incarcerated in their own homes and are facing shortages of food and medicines. The day is also a stark reminder to international community and the UN Security Council to fulfil its responsibility vis-à-vis resolution of Kashmir dispute before it is too late. There have been verbal condemnation from different countries about the situation in IOK but time has come to take some practical steps in order to pressurise Modi government to lift restrictions in the Valley.
Important capitals especially Washington needs to exert pressure on India to allow visits of foreign observers and media to the Valley so that true picture of Indian fascism comes before the world. Most importantly, Muslim countries have a very essential role to play. We really appreciate the unequivocal stance of Malaysia and Turkey and we expect that other Muslim countries will also be forthcoming and openly extend their support to the oppressed Kashmiri people while rejecting any sort of expediency.
