THE nation observed defence of Pakistan day with full resolve and commitment to make every sacrifice for the
cause of the motherland. The scale and level of participation of masses in day-related activities and programmes clearly showed that despite political differences and polarization, the entire Pakistan stands united to defend the country against any foreign threat.
Defence of Pakistan Day is observed to freshen the memories of what had happened on this day in 1965 when the enemy carried out aggression to inflict harm on the country but received a befitting response as the nation stood like a rock behind its armed forces to thwart its designs. Similar situation exists today as India has illegally annexed occupied Kashmir and is engaged in brutal repression there to silence the voice of Kashmiris for their right to self-determination. Kashmir being jugular vein of Pakistan, actions of Modi present serious threat to the security and economy of the country as well as peace and stability of the region. It was in this backdrop that the day was also observed as Solidarity Day with Kashmiris who have been under siege of Indian occupation forces for the last over one month. Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on Information and Broadcasting Dr. Firdous Ashiq Awan rightly pointed out that Kashmir was the line of defence of Pakistan, asserting that defending the stance of Kashmiris was tantamount to strengthening the defence of Pakistan. The steadfast support and show of unflinching solidarity must be a source of encouragement and inspiration for Kashmiris who are waging a war for their legitimate right, also guaranteed to them under the relevant UN Security Council resolutions. There can be no denying the fact that it was the spirit of 1965 that has help Pakistan successfully face and overcome numerous challenges. Pakistanis and Kashmiris are once again confronted with a serious challenge, which is directly linked to their future, security and survival, but the unshakable resolve of the nation to go to any extent to thwart designs of the enemy augurs well for a positive outcome of the prevailing treacherous situation. There is, however, dire need to take measures to strengthen national unity through a process of reconciliation.
