NEW York – South Africa beat Sri Lanka by six wickets in a Group-D match of the T20 World Cup 2024 in New York on Monday.
Chasing a below-par 78-run target for victory, South Africa crossed the finishing line for the loss of four wickets in 16.2 overs. Quinton de Kock was the highest scorer with 20 runs followed by Heinrich Klaasen who made 19 runs. Tristan Stubs scored 13 runs and skipper Aidan Markram 12 runs. Wanindu Hasaranga bagged two wickets while Dasun Shanaka and Nuwan Thushara took one wicket each. Anrich Nortje was named player of the match.
After winning the toss and electing to bat first, Sri Lanka kept losing wickets right from the start and were bowled out at 77 in 19.1 overs. Kusal Mendis was the top scorer with 19 runs followed by Angelo Mathews who made 16 runs. Kamindu Mendis scored 11 runs. No other batter could enter the double figures.
Anrich Nortje bagged four wickets, Keshav Maharaj and Kagiso Rabada two each while Ottneil Baartman took one wicket. Nuwan Thushara was rund out.
