A high level meeting, chaired by Prime Minister Anwar-ul-Haq Kakar on Monday, took a number of decisions for system streamlining in the Federal Capital. The decisions related to augmentation of the public transport system, establishment of a car city, launch of indiscriminate operation against illegal occupation and encroachments on the land in the capital, action against drug dealers and establishment of a digital system for registration of vehicles in Islamabad and other cities of the country.
The proactive approach adopted by the interim Government to resolve problems of the people in the Federal Capital is a testimony to the fact that things can be improved with vision, sincerity and commitment. A multi-dimensional operation is already underway in different parts of the country to break the back of mafias and it is but natural that the Islamabad Capital Territory should become a role model in this context. Islamabad is not a big city and therefore, it should be a matter of concern for the relevant authorities if drug dealers operate freely and destroy the lives of our youth. Similarly, there are entire sectors in the clutches of illegal occupants and the Federal Government as well as the Capital Development Authority (CDA) showed no worthwhile interest to vacate them. As caretakers have no political stakes, it is hoped they would take stern action against such practices and the capital would be cleaned of drug dealers and land grabbers. The public transport system in the capital is providing decent travel facilities to the people at affordable fares and in this backdrop the decision to add 160 more buses to the fleet is welcome as it would help introduce new routes and reduce waiting time for passengers on the existing ones. The decision to set up a car city for sale/purchase of vehicles is also a step in the right direction as it would help ease traffic pressure in some areas besides enabling buyers and sellers to do business at one central place.
