PRIME Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s announcement to solarise 28,000 tube wells in Balochistan marks a significant stride towards addressing longstanding issues in the province’s agricultural sector. The initiative, projected to cost Rs55 billion with substantial federal support, aims to provide farmers with reliable and affordable electricity, thereby enhancing agricultural productivity and sustainability.

Balochistan, endowed with vast agricultural potential, particularly in crops like pistachios, almonds, walnuts, and apricots, has historically faced challenges due to inadequate access to electricity. Many tube wells connected to the grid function for only a few hours daily, severely limiting farmers’ ability to irrigate their lands effectively. This inconsistency directly impacts crop yields and overall farm profitability. The decision to solarise these tube wells is not merely a matter of infrastructure upgrade but a strategic investment in the province’s economic development. By harnessing solar energy, farmers will gain access to uninterrupted power, enabling them to irrigate their fields throughout the day and optimize crop production cycles. However, amidst the optimism, it’s crucial to acknowledge the skepticism that often accompanies such announcements. Past initiatives to improve infrastructure and support agriculture in Balochistan have often faltered due to implementation challenges. Many well-intentioned plans have remained on paper, failing to translate into tangible benefits for farmers. Since the assurance of its implementation in three months has been given by the PM, we expect timely progress. The success of this initiative hinges not just on timely execution but also on ensuring transparency, accountability and effective coordination between federal and provincial authorities. Supporting agriculture in Balochistan is not merely about boosting crop yields; it’s about unlocking the province’s full economic potential. With the right infrastructure and policy support, agriculture can emerge as a key driver of economic growth, employment generation and poverty alleviation in the province. The revenue generated from agricultural exports can significantly contribute to overall economic stability.
