The Sindh Solid Waste Management Board (SSWMB) has greenlit the establishment of subsidiary boards tasked with overseeing trash collection and disposal in Karachi, Hyderabad, and Sukkur cities. This decision came during the inaugural meeting of the provincial steering committee of the SSWMB, held on Friday. Chaired by Sindh Minister for Local Government, Town Planning, Public Health Engineering, and Rural Development, SaeedGhani, the meeting marked a crucial step towards improving waste management practices across key urban centers in the province.
The subsidiary boards for Karachi, Hyderabad, and Sukkur will consist of non-permanent members, including two technical experts from academia, a representative from non-governmental organizations, and an individual with technical proficiency in solid waste disposal.
However, the steering committee noted that no nominations had been put forward yet for the establishment of the waste management board in Larkana. It was decided that the Sindh Local Government Minister and Larkana Mayor would collaborate to finalize the board members for the Larkana division. Key stakeholders attending the steering committee meeting included Karachi Mayor Barrister MurtazaWahab, Hyderabad Mayor KashifShoro, Sukkur Mayor Barrister Arsalan Islam Sheikh, Additional Chief Secretary Local Government Khalid Hyder Shah, Karachi’s Additional Commissioner-1 SeharIftikhar, SSWMB Managing Director ImtiazAli Shah, Vice-Chancellor of NED University of Engineering & Technology Prof Dr. SaroshHashmat Lodi, and Local Government Department Additional Secretary Liquat Ali Bhatti, among other senior officials.
