No extortion complaint from Chinese, says IG
Sindh Home Minister Ziaul Hasan Lanjar on Saturday took notice of Chinese investors’ complaints against Sindh police. Chinese investors filed plea in the Sindh High Court against alleged harassment and extortion by the Sindh police.
Home Minister Ziaul Hasan Lanjar instructed Inspector General of Sindh Police, Ghulam Nabi Memon, to initiate an inquiry into the matter and appoint a senior police officer to oversee the investigation.
He stated that the Sindh government and police are committed to providing foolproof security to non-CPEC Chinese nationals according to the SOPs. Home Minister directed the police officials to identify and address any security gaps. He noted that local sponsors also share the responsibility of ensuring the safety of their Chinese staff.
Ziaul Hasan Lanjar urged local sponsors to inform the authorities about their Chinese staff as this information is necessary for the police officials to carry out proper checks and enforce SOPs effectively.
Meanwhile, Sindh Inspector General of Police Ghulam Nabi Memon has said that no complaint of extortion involving Chinese nationals has been reported in the province.
Speaking to a news channel on Saturday, the top cop highlighted that due to security concerns, the movement of Chinese nationals has been significantly restricted.
The IG emphasised that the police are obligated to strictly implement Standard Operating Procedures related to the security of foreigners residing in Sindh.
“We cannot compromise on the safety of our Chinese brothers,” he said, reiterating the importance of ensuring their protection.
However, the tightened security measures have affected local sponsors, who are no longer receiving the same level of support as before, Memon noted.
