KARACHI, the economic hub of Pakistan, has long struggled with the challenges of an inefficient and overburdened transportation system. However, the city is now witnessing a remarkable transformation in its transport sector. Credit for this really goes to the Sindh government but the way its Minister for Information and Transport Sharjeel Memon is focusing and diligently working to bring improvement in the transport system is really commendable.
Recognizing the pressing need for an efficient and reliable mode of transport, Sharjeel Memon is spearheading initiatives to revamp the public transit infrastructure. New and modern buses, equipped with state-of-the-art facilities, have been introduced on various routes in the city, providing commuters with a comfortable and safe journey. Digital platforms are also now being implemented to streamline public transportation operations allowing commuters to plan their journeys and track buses in real time. The Peoples Bus Service’s App has been prepared, the details of which were shared by the Transport Minister the other day. This will offer a range of features to enhance passengers’ travel experience. These include real-time vehicle tracking, online booking, route information, fare details and a platform to submit complaints directly to the relevant authorities. The implementation of the Intelligent Transport System will also enable comprehensive vehicle monitoring through the installation of CCTV cameras in the buses. To further improve passenger convenience, the buses will be equipped with amenities such as audio systems, USB ports, Wi-Fi communication systems and driver alarms. These additions aim to ensure passenger safety and enhance overall satisfaction during their journey. An integrated and modern transport was needed in big cities such as Karachi, given the increase in its population and it is good to see Sharjeel Memon working relentlessly on it. Sharjeel Memon has also announced plans to connect rural areas in Karachi, Hyderabad, Larkana, Sukkur and Mirpurkhas with urban areas through the Peoples Bus Service. Indeed this will be a big relief and address most of the woes of the commuters. We will also suggest the provincial government to also give priority to full operationalization of Karachi circular railway project which in fact entail immense benefits and will change the whole landscape of the provincial metropolis.
