Kashmiri woman activist Shaista Safi has warned the United Nations Human Rights Council of the genocide of Kashmiri people by Indian forces.
Shaista Safi was speaking at the United Nations Geneva office during the Human Rights Council 43rd session titled “Human Rights situations that require the Council’s attention” on Wednesday.
Shaista Safi who was representing the International Human Rights Association of American Minorities (IHRAAM), said that the historically grave human rights violations, including sexual violence against women, the mass unmarked graves in Indian occupied Kashmir, the recent 7-month lockdown and the gross denial of freedom of expression are by action a demonstration of the expressed intent to commit crimes against humanity and genocide against the people of Jammu and Kashmir.
She said that the abrogation of its own constitutional guarantees to the people of Kashmir, even the so-called ‘democratically‘ elected leaders under the Indian system along with populist resistance leaders have been kept under house arrest or jailed without charge such as Asiya Andrabi, Syed Ali Geelani, Yasin Malik, Shabbir Shah, and Mirwaiz Umar Farooq among others.
She said that the International human rights groups have accused India of using excessive force that leads to unlawful killings, summary or arbitrary executions.
The figures suggested nearly a hundred thousand killings over the last 30 years, which demonstrates there is a systematic pattern in place with an intent to destroy in whole or in part the Kashmiris living in that part of the world.
Equally, there is a planned policy in place to cause serious bodily and mental harm to Kashmiris.
This leads to deliberately inflicting on Kashmiris conditions of life, calculated to bring about its physical destruction in whole or in part “Therefore, IHRAAM addresses the President of the Human Rights Council to constitute an international commission of inquiry on the genocide that is happening in the state of Jammu & Kashmir occupied by India. We also call for the prosecution under the genocide convention and under universal jurisdiction of the alleged perpetrators of the crime of genocide in India occupied Kashmir,” concluded Shaista Safi.—KMS
