Senate body adopts resolution for action against guilty of May violence

The Senate Standing Committee on Interior strongly condemning the May 9 attacks on military installations and monuments of martyrs unanimously passed a resolution with recommendations that the guilty persons should not be spared and they should be punished under the law by way of summary trial whereas the innocent persons may not be involved in such cases.

The meeting of the Senate Body was held at Parliament House Islamabad on Thursday under the chair of Senator Mohsin Aziz and attended by by Senator Samina Mumtaz Zehri, Senator Rana Maqbool Ahmed, Senator Faisal Saleem Rehman, Senator Shahdat Awan, Senator Kamil Ali Agha, Senator Seemi Ezdi and Senator Bahramand Khan Tangi and senior officers from the Ministries of Interior and Law and Justice and other concerned departments.

The Committee acknowledged the sacrifices of law enforcement agencies (LEAs) in restoring peace in the country and urged that the sacrifices of martyrs for the homeland cannot be forgotten and the desecration of their monuments was strongly condemned.

The Committee considered and passed with amendments the Christian Marriage (Amendment) Bill 2023 introduced by Senator Kamran Michel, the Anti-Rape (Investigation and Trial) (Amendment) Bill 2023 introduced by Senator Samina Mumtaz Zehri and the Criminal Laws (Amendment) Bill 2023 introduced by Senator Seemi Ezdi.

The Criminal Procedures (Amendment) Bill, 2023 introduced by Senator Zeeshan Khanzada was considered by the Committee but not recommended by the Committee. The remaining Bills on the agenda were deferred.

Deliberating over the Public Petition regarding the service of Mr. Ahmed Jamal at the Directorate of Immigration and Passports, Islamabad; the Committee recommended that the petition may be referred to Special Committee for sacked employees under the chairmanship of Mr. Abdul Qadir Mandokhail (MNA) for favourable consideration.

Deputy Commissioner Islamabad and the Director (Enforcement) CDA briefed the Committee about the newly announced schemes regarding vending points in Islamabad, compliance regarding encroachments and illegal occupation in green belts and operations against it and constructing roadside kennels and bird cage.—INP
