ISLAMABAD – A Supreme Court (SC) constitutional bench on Tuesday dismissed a petition challenging extension of Army Chief General Syed Asim Munir’s tenure.

The seven-member constitutional bench led by Justice Aminuddin Khan passed the order on the plea objected by the Registrar Office.

As the hearing commenced, the petitioner did not appear before the court.

On it, the SC constitutional bench dismissed the petition on the grounds of not pursuing it.

Earlier, the federal cabinet had approved a bill to extend the tenure of the services chiefs including Army Chief to five years.

During a meeting chaired by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, the cabinet also approved a bill to amend the Army Act, which would allow an extension of tenure for all service chiefs to five years.

Later, the bill to extend the tenure of services chiefs was passed by both the National Assembly and the Senate with a majority vote.
