The Salt Manufacturers Association of Pakistan has called on Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif and Federal Minister of Communications Abdul Aleem Khan to address the rising issue of transporter extortion under the axle load regulations. QasimYaqoobParacha, Chairman of SMAP, highlighted that the enforcement of axle load regulations for truck carriage has led to increased extortion from traders.

Transporters are exploiting loopholes in the axle load limits, charging traders for loads beyond the regulated limits of 30 to 32 tons, and imposing unnecessary fines and delays during deliveries. This exploitation has significantly raised transport costs, severely impacting export activities. The unfair practice not only inflates transport costs but also adversely affects various sectors, including the salt industry, hampering overall export activities. Paracha urged the government to ensure strict adherence to the Ministry of Communication’s axle load regulations and enforce fair charges for goods transportation. He emphasized the need for clearly defined and enforced axle load limits for truck carriage nationwide. The SMAP Chairman called for government action to regulate transporter practices, ensuring that they adhere strictly to government-regulated charges based on stipulated load limits. This intervention is crucial to prevent the detrimental impact on transport costs and export activities, thereby supporting various sectors, including the salt industry.
