LONDON – UK newly elected Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer has appointed 45-year-old Rachel Reeves as the country’s Chancellor of the Exchequer.

According to British media reports, Rachel Reeves, a child chess champion and economist at the Bank of England, is the first female Chancellor of the Exchequer in British political history.

Despite difficult circumstances, Rachel Reeves has reiterated her commitment to improving the country’s economy.

In the recent parliamentary elections in the UK, the Labour Party won by a large majority, ending the Conservative Party’s 14-year rule.

Following Labour’s victory, Rachel Reeves was elected as Chancellor of the Exchequer.

After being elected, Rachel Reeves wrote on social media that this moment shows every girl and woman reading this that there are no limits to their ambitions.

It may be mentioned here that the Labour Party prioritized economic growth in its election manifesto, making it the government’s top priority.

Regarding this, Rachel Reeves said that economic growth is their mission, and now it is time to get to work.

Who is Rachel Reeves?

Rachel Reeves’ parents were teachers, and she became the chess champion of the UK at the age of 14.

She studied Philosophy, Politics, and Economics at Oxford University and then completed her master’s degree at the London School of Economics.

After completing her graduation, Rachel Reeves worked as an economist at the Bank of England for a decade.

During her time at the British retail bank HBOS, when the global financial crisis hit in 2008, Rachel Reeves successfully secured a significant bailout under Gordon Brown’s Labour government.

In 2010, when the Conservative Party formed a coalition government with the Liberal Democrats, Rachel Reeves was elected as the Member of Parliament for Leeds.

Nearly 11 years later, the newly elected Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer has appointed Rachel Reeves as the Chancellor of the Exchequer, while her sister Ellie Reeves is also a Member of Parliament from the Labour Party.
