ISLAMABAD – Petrol and diesel prices have been cut again in Pakistan, giving inflation-weary Pakistanis another dose of relief as the government slashed petroleum rates for September 30 — just a day after announcing another reduction.
Petrol has been reduced by Rs1.49 per litre, bringing the price down from Rs389.03 to Rs387.54 per litre. The government has also cut the price of high-speed diesel by Rs2.73 per litre, taking it from Rs404.97 to Rs402.24 per litre.
The latest cuts come on the heels of the September 29 reduction, when petrol prices were lowered by Rs2.27 per litre, with diesel prices also receiving a cut.
The latest reductions mark a sharp turnaround after petrol prices surged dramatically during the first three weeks of September. Petrol opened the month at just Rs342.79 per litre on September 1. The price then climbed steadily, with a particularly sharp increase recorded on September 8, when it jumped by Rs12.90 per litre to Rs358.77. The upward momentum continued through the month.

Pakistan’s petroleum prices are revised according to several factors built into the pricing mechanism. These include international Platts prices, movements in the exchange rate, import premiums, applicable costs and margins, among other components. The latest back-to-back cuts follow a period of substantial increases that pushed petrol to its September peak of Rs393.75 per litre on September 22.
Since then, the price has moved lower, with the latest reduction taking petrol to Rs387.54 per litre and high-speed diesel to Rs402.24 per litre, effective September 30.
