LAHORE – Punjab has approved the establishment of the region’s largest and most advanced climate observatory.
The key objective of this important project is to assist in timely forecasting, analysis, and policymaking related to climate change.
A high-level meeting chaired by Senior Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb was informed that the climate observatory will be set up at the Punjab Planning & Development House. The University of Engineering and Technology (UET) Lahore has already submitted a comprehensive report regarding the establishment of the observatory.
A feasibility plan has been prepared for the provision of budget, equipment, and land. The observatory will be equipped with a state-of-the-art automated communication and linkage system. The plan also includes the establishment of a GIS lab, a sectoral interface system, and a modern data hub. Scientific research will be further strengthened through the implementation of an MRI system.
World-class professional staff will be recruited, and environmental experts in every sector will be trained through internship programs. The meeting also approved the establishment of a data archive system, a coordination unit, and an international communication cell.
Ms Aurangzeb termed the initiative a revolutionary step in environmental protection. She emphasised that the observatory will be operated under a modern management model, with a smart organogram to be developed for its effective functioning.
She further stated that this observatory will prove to be a milestone not only for Punjab but for the entire region in environmental research, knowledge sharing, and policymaking.
