LAHORE – The Punjab Food Authority (PFA) has decided to upgrade slaughterhouses to international standards.
PFA officials held meeting with the Technical Wing, Additional Secretary Livestock & Additional Secretary Local Government to finalize the roadmap.
Key actions include forming a task force with Livestock & Dairy Development officials & implementing SOPs for pre-mortem & post-mortem inspections. Vaccination records, pre-slaughter disease screening, worker medical checks & hygiene measures will be mandatory.
DG PFA Asim Javed highlighted that post-slaughter inspections will also be enforced with a focus on health & environmental compliance. Existing laws are under review for necessary amendments & implementation will follow a phased approach.
To ensure quality standards, PFA will train meat handlers, monitor processes from preparation to distribution & digitize data on slaughterhouses, farmhouses & poultry sheds. Strict action will be taken to eliminate the use of meat from sick or dead animals.
“Licensing of all slaughterhouses is mandatory & those operating without a license or using unfit animals will face legal consequences,” stated DG PFA.
