INDEPENDENT nations never forget their heroes and mar
tyrs. With the same spirit, Pakistani nation marked Police Martyrs Day on Sunday with ceremonies held across the country to pay tribute to the personnel who rendered their lives for the peace and security of the homeland.
Also in their separate messages, President Arif Alvi and Chief of Army Staff General Qamar paid glowing tributes to the police martyrs. Indeed despite limited resources, Police Department has over the years made extraordinary contribution valiantly along with the defence forces to defeat the curse of terrorism. Even today, these cops are the first target of the terrorists and one saw this in some of the recent acts of terrorism including the one that took place most recently in Dera Ismail Khan. There are endless stories of bravery of policemen who whilst putting their life at risk save the lives of many people. The nation will always remain indebted to their sacrifices. This Day is also time to express solidarity with the families of the martyrs and indeed it is the responsibility of federal and provincial governments to fully look after them. Shuhada Package has been approved by the Prime Minister and we expect that it will also be implemented in letter and spirit. Though no compensation is sufficient for human life but taking care of the bereaved families is responsibility of the State which should be fulfilled without any negligence. Then indeed steps need to be taken towards capacity building of police personnel as per modern trends preparing and equipping them with the training and tools so that they could effectively discharge their duties and bring the perpetrators of crimes to justice.
