ISLAMABAD – Speaker National Assembly Sardar Ayaz Sadiq has declared Omar Ayub Khan as the Leader of Opposition in the Lower House.

It was finalized during a meeting of opposition’s members Barrister Gohar Ali Khan, Omar Ayub and Malik Amir Dogar with the Speaker in Islamabad on Tuesday (today).

Omar Ayub’s name was submitted by majority of the opposition.

It is a major development in the ongoing political situation in the country.

The NA secretariat through X, previously known as Twitter, confirmed the appointment of Omar Ayub as the Leader of the Opposition by the Speaker of the National Assembly. This decision follows the completion of the scrutiny process outlined in Rule 39 of the Rules of Procedure and Conduct of Business of the National Assembly.

Ayub’s nomination garnered the support of the majority within the opposition.

The deadline for the submission of nominations for the Leader of the Opposition was April 1, 2024, at 6 pm, with no other candidates submitting papers by the specified time, as stated by the NA.

Ayub was initially nominated for the position by the PTI-Sunni Ittehad Council (SIC) alliance on March 10. The nomination was formally presented to the Speaker’s office by Malik Amir Dogar, Sahibzada Hamid Raza, Ali Muhammad Khan, Riaz Fatiana, Dr. Nisar Jat, and others, accompanied by signatures from 92 SIC lawmakers.
