Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah has announced the establishment of trauma centres along highways to provide immediate medical aid to road accident victims, potentially saving lives. Speaking at the 58th Convocation of the College of Physicians and Surgeons Pakistan), he stressed the importance of rapid medical response in preventing fatalities. Shah directed the Secretary of Health and the Executive Director of Sehwan Hospital to ensure these emergency trauma centres are set up across the province.

He pointed out that while the Shaheed Benazir Bhutto Trauma Centre at Civil Hospital Karachi already provides critical care, similar facilities are urgently needed in other parts of Sindh.

Referring to a recent accident near Manjhand that claimed three lives, he remarked that timely medical intervention could have made a difference. The convocation was attended by CPSP President Prof. Muhammad Shoaib Shafi, President of the Royal College of Edinburgh Prof. Andrew, Head of the Bangladesh College of Physicians & Surgeons Prof. Shaheedullah, Prof. Khalid Masood Gondal, senior faculty, and graduating specialists. Addressing the gathering, Shah noted that only seven medical colleges and institutes in Sindh are officially recognised for critical healthcare, while others await approval. He directed the Secretary of Health to work with CPSP to resolve the issue.

The chief minister highlighted Sindh’s healthcare advancements, particularly the achievements of the National Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases. “NICVD is the only institution in the region performing the highest number of primary angiographies under one roof at NICVD Karachi,” he said, adding that it operates 24 chest units and nine satellite centres. He also apraised the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre for offering state-of-the-art radiology services, including three Cyber Knife machines.

“This is the only place in the world providing Cyber Knife treatment free of charge—a procedure that costs between $15,000 and $100,000 elsewhere. Patients from all over Pakistan and even expatriates have come here for treatment,” he stated. Shah took pride in Sindh’s partnership with Indus Hospital, describing it as the largest public-private healthcare collaboration in the country. He also commended the establishment of the Sindh Institute of Endocrinology and Diabetes at Civil Hospital, led by Dr. Saad Niaz.

“Ensuring healthcare access is the government’s primary responsibility, and we are committed to working with the private sector to provide world-class medical facilities,” he said.
