The Karachi Water & Sewerage Corporation (KW&SC) has issued orders for heightened preparedness among its officers in anticipation of potential rainfall on March 1. According to a KW&SB spokesperson, COO Engineer Asadullah Khan instructed all officers, including the Chief Engineer Sewerage, to remain vigilant.
He emphasized that all machinery, including jetting, suction, rodding, sewer cleaning machines, and dewatering pumps, should be kept operational at all times. Additionally, Superintending Engineers and Executive Engineers, along with their staff, are required to stay within their designated areas. Preparations include positioning machinery along major city highways to mitigate any inconvenience to citizens. Drain cleaning operations are underway ahead of the expected rainfall, with pumping stations for water supply and sewerage equipped with backup generators to address potential power outages. Spokesperson highlighted challenges posed by the city’s sewage system, which is not designed for rainwater discharge. Solid waste, debris, and garbage washed away by rain often clog sewer lines, exacerbating the situation. In response, KW&SB has initiated efforts to secure manholes on main roads.
