Doctors, nurses and social activists took to streets in India against rape and murder of female trainee doctor Moumita Debnath in Kolkata hospital.
The rallies conducted by thousands of medical professionals called for justice and the resignation of RG Kar Medical College principal. Most protests remained peaceful, some vandalism incidents were reported.
Moumita’s death was initially reported as a suicide, but an autopsy made shocking revealations as she was raped and murdered. As per report, victim suffered severe physical assault.
After her death, several reports emerged about potential criminal activities on campus, including allegations of illegal activities. Accusations have also surfaced implicating influential figures in the case, further intensifying public anger and calls for a comprehensive investigation.
Several medical services were also stopped as agitators called for protection. Although some protests were suspended after the government promised to enforce the Central Protection Act for medical professionals, other groups continue to strike, demanding stronger action and harsher penalties for violence against doctors.

Moumita was medical professional and environmental scientist who hailed from West Indian state of Bengal. She was a second-year postgraduate trainee at a local Medical College, specializing in chest medicine, while also pursuing doctorate in environmental science.
She was found dead on August 9, 2024, in the college, after being sexually assaulted and murdered. Her death has sparked discussions on the safety and well-being of healthcare professionals.
Amid the probe, Sanjay Roy, a civic volunteer, has been identified in connection with the crime.
