AmeerJamaat-e-Islami Karachi, MunemZafar Khan, has urgently called for the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) to immediately arrange the cleaning of all major drains in the city. He stressed the need for the full disbursement of the 670 million budget allocated for this task and demanded a definitive timeline for the cleaning of GujjarNala. Speaking at a press conference at Idara Noor-e-Haq, Khan highlighted the complaints from residents about their names being omitted from the housing project lists for flood victims. Surveys were conducted by the Pakistan Army, Rangers, and private parties to ensure comprehensive data collection. He stated that 2.1 million houses are being constructed for flood victims in Sindh.
Khan demanded to revoke K-Electric’s license and conduct a forensic audit, called for affordable electricity and an end to load-shedding. Munem said Jamaat-e-Islami to hold a protest in Islamabad on July 26 under the leadership of Hafiz NaeemurRehman. Khan also criticized the provincial government’s inaction, noting that 538 small and large drains in Karachi need cleaning. Despite plans starting in May, significant progress has not been made due to government negligence.
He also condemned the transport costs and systemic corruption affecting drain cleaning and housing projects. Khan highlighted the disparity in tax burdens, criticizing the federal budget for disproportionately taxing salaried individuals while sparing large landowners. He called for the immediate removal of unfair taxes on the salaried class and provision of relief. He urged the government to ensure efficient and effective cleaning of the city’s drains and to resolve the ongoing electricity and water crises. The negligence and corruption within these sectors pose significant risks to public safety and well-being.
