ISLAMABAD – Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) finally opened up about slow internet in Pakistan, pinning blame on faulty submarine cables and clarifying that firewall installation is not causing massive glitch.
PTA Chairman Retired Major General Hafeezur Rehman clarified as he faced intense questioning about widespread internet issues.

Internet speeds saw big decline over the past few weeks, causing issues for users trying to send or download media and voice notes on WhatsApp via mobile data, and experiencing sluggish browsing speeds on broadband connections.
Social media users and internet service providers suggested that government’s attempts to monitor internet traffic that is resulting in big financial losses.
Committee also questioned ban on social media platform X and sought information on when it would be lifted. Rehman admitted he had no additional information beyond what the committee had. NA Committee members opposed ban on social media, arguing it hindered progress, and requested updates on IT parks in Islamabad and Karachi.
Committee Chairman Amin ul Haq urged government to ensure 5G services were available in Pakistan by March, expressing frustration over delays despite efforts towards a 5G auction. He stressed the need for 5G deployment by December or March to meet public expectations.
