Inquiry commission approval

The federal cabinet has authorised constitution of an inquiry commission to investigate allegations made by the Islamabad High Court (IHC) judges, which is crucial in addressing this sensitive matter. We welcome formation of the commission, recognising the necessity of addressing these allegations promptly and with due diligence.

The Terms of Reference (ToR) of the inquiry commission are appropriately broad, allowing for a thorough investigation into the allegations and granting the commission authority to recommend action against any individual or entity found culpable. Crucially, the commission is empowered to explore related issues that may arise during its proceedings, ensuring that no stone is left unturned in the pursuit of truth and justice. However, it is regrettable to note that certain elements have already begun to cast doubt on the appointment of Justice Jillani to lead the commission, even before its work has commenced.

This premature scepticism overlooks Justice Jillani’s distinguished career and reputation as a fair and balanced jurist. With over a decade of service as a Supreme Court judge, including tenure as Chief Justice of Pakistan, Justice Jillani brings a wealth of experience and integrity to this crucial role. It is imperative that these voices withhold judgment and allow Justice Jillani and the inquiry commission the opportunity to conduct their work impartially and without interference. This is not a matter for politics or controversy; rather, it is a solemn duty to uphold principles of justice and rule of law. The Constitution of Pakistan enshrines the principle of separation of powers, and it is incumbent upon all institutions to respect and abide by their respective roles. It is the only way through which we can march forward and effectively address challenges facing the country. We expect that the commission will complete its investigation within the defined timeframe and that the findings will be acceptable to all.
