An Indian army soldier died of a gunshot injury under suspicious circumstances in Jammu district of Indian illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir.

According to Kashmir Media Service, the soldier on sentry duty died in Tanda near Akhnoor town of the district. Whether it was an accidental firing, suicide or he was shot by another soldier inside the unit is yet to be ascertained.

When the soldier, called Agniveer as per India’s new recruitment policy, was on duty, others at the unit heard the gunshot. They rushed towards the scene and found him lying injured. He was rushed to a nearby military hospital where he was declared dead.

There is growing resentment among Indian soldiers, for that matter agniveers, over the Agnipath Scheme because they are recruited for a tenure of four years including six months training. After retirement from the service, these agniveers are not entitled to pension and other military benefits.—INP
