ISLAMABAD – Pakistan Army spokesperson Lieutenant General Ahmad Sharif Chaudhry described prospect of nuclear conflict between Pakistan and India as sheer “foolishness” and an “unimaginable and irrational idea” that would lead to mutual destruction for both nations.
In recent interview with BBC, Lt. Gen. Chaudhry reiterated Islamabad’s commitment to peace, saying Pakistan prioritizes peace, we love peace, but if war is imposed upon us, Pakistan is always ready.
Addressing recent clashes with India, ISPR chief warned that India is “playing with fire” by promoting provocative narrative. He noted, “A military conflict between two nuclear-armed neighbors is an extremely reckless act and should be avoided at all costs.”
The military official also criticized New Delhi’s internal political dynamics, suggesting that ongoing hostile rhetoric is partly driven by domestic political considerations. He urged that any evidence of Pakistani involvement in terrorist activities be presented to Pakistan for action, underscoring Islamabad’s stance against terrorism.
Sharif highlighted Pakistan’s measured and responsible response to Indian airstrikes in early May, claiming six Indian planes were shot down and emphasizing that Pakistan’s leadership acted with maturity to prevent escalation. Regarding ceasefire negotiations, he revealed that India’s military initiated contact after Pakistan’s counterattacks, and both sides agreed to a truce facilitated by international mediation.
Army spokesperson further dismissed Indian claims that Pakistan was forewarned before the airstrikes, calling it ridiculous narrative, and reaffirmed that Pakistan’s intelligence apparatus is fully capable of independently monitoring cross-border threats.
He further challenged India to provide credible evidence of terrorist camps on Pakistani soil and criticized the Indian media’s portrayal of Pakistani military personnel attending funerals of deceased militants, emphasizing that honoring fallen citizens is a sovereign matter.
The recent conflict, triggered by the February Pulwama attack and subsequent retaliatory strikes, has underscored the fragile security situation in the region. Lt. Gen. Chaudhry’s remarks aim to clarify Pakistan’s position: peace remains the priority, but Pakistan stands firm and prepared against any aggression.
