NEW DEHLI –  India on Tuesday moved Bangladesh former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina Wazed to a secret location until she received the political asylum in the United Kingdom.

Prior to Sheikh Hasina Wazed’s arrival in the Indian city of Agartala, the Indian Prime Minister convened an emergency meeting of the security cabinet due to the deteriorating situation in Bangladesh.

Bangladesh TV claimed in its report that India moved Hasina
Wazed to a secret location and added that she wanted to seek political asylum in the United Kingdom.

The reports suggested that Sheikh Hasina Wazed’s daughter, Saima Wazed, is residing in New Delhi and Sheikh Hasina Wazed is expected to meet her soon.

In the violent incidents ongoing for the past month in Bangladesh, hundreds have been killed, and students are continuing their civil disobedience movement.

This week, students demanded Sheikh Hasina Wazed’s resignation, to which she responded by labeling them as a handful of terrorists.

The statement from Sheikh Hasina Wazed further fueled anger among the students and intensified their protests.

After the protests became extremely violent, the Bangladeshi Army Chief gave the Prime Minister a 45-minute deadline to resign. Sheikh Hasina Wazed attempted to record a speech for the nation but was stopped.

Subsequently, she resigned and departed by helicopter to India from the Prime Minister’s residence, marking the end of her 15-year tenure.

Upon news of the Prime Minister’s resignation, a wave of joy spread among the protesters, turning the demonstrations into celebrations.

The previous day, Bangladeshi Army Chief General Waqar-ul-Zaman announced on television that a transitional government would be established in the country.

However, the leading figures of the student movement rejected the Army Chief’s decision and demanded formation of a transitional government under the leadership of Nobel laureate Dr. Yunus.

Since yesterday evening, the protesters from the student movement targeted the offices and members of Parliament of the Awami League. They set fire to the personal residence of Bangladesh’s founder, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the central headquarters of the Awami League and the homes of various Awami League members including former national cricket team captain Mashrafe Mortaza.
