Mushaal Hussein Mullick, the Chairperson of Peace and Culture Organisation and wife of jailed Kashmiri Hurriyat leader, Muhammad Yasin Malik, has said that India has virtually turned Indian illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir into a military garrison where all basic rights of the people have been usurped.
Mushaal in a statement in Islamabad said that Kashmir was one of the oldest unresolved disputes pending with the United Nations.
She said that Kashmir Institute of International Relations in its letter to the UN Secretary General rightly raised the point that India had been trying to make the United Nations Military Observer Group in India and Pakistan’s (UNMOGIP) presence in the region controversial.
Mushaal stated that the Kashmir dispute was a constant source of tension between two nuclear countries Pakistan and India, which resulted in multiple wars. She reminded that the UN should honour its long-forgotten unfulfilled promise of holding a plebiscite in Jammu and Kashmir.
She called upon the international community to take action on human rights violations being committed with impunity by the Indian forces against innocent Kashmiri men, women and children.
Mushaal said that it was time for the world to ensure the long-denied right to self-determination of Kashmiris, which was the only viable and agreed solution to the decades-long dispute.—KMS
