Local sources in the northwest Afghan province of Herat say that 86 people were injured and 48 people, including Mawlawi Mujib Rahman Ansari, died in the Friday explosion of the Guzargah mosque.
At least 20 casualties were reported in the initial reports of the explosion at the Guzargah mosque in the province of Herat.
On the other contrary, the Interior Ministry of the Taliban administration says that the explosion at the Herat Guzargah mosque which took place in time with the Friday congregational prayer resulted in 18 fatalities and 23 injuries.
Local sources claim that there were more fatalities than the Taliban government officials have reported as a result of the explosion, which also claimed the life of Mawlawi Ansari, a Taliban supporter.
In a tweet on Friday, September 2, the spokesperson for the Taliban government, Zabihullah Mujahid, offered his condolences and noted that the religious scholar, Mawlawi Ansari, had been killed in a “cowardly attack by the enemies of the religion.” According to a Taliban official, the Friday explosion happened inside the mosque where Mawlawi Ansari was leading Friday prayers.—Khaama News Agency
