At a weekly meeting held at a local hotel by the Rotary Club Karachi, IG Sindh GhulamNabiMemon addressed several key issues related to crime prevention and police efforts. IG Memon discussed the importance of modern technology in crime prevention, noting that many cities globally are utilizing cameras and advanced tech. He highlighted that Sindh has installed facial recognition cameras at both internal and external city entry points to enhance safety. Under the Safe City Project, 1,200 additional cameras will be installed within the city. Future plans include using cameras to issue traffic tickets. Addressing the impact of economic instability, Memon acknowledged that increased unemployment has contributed to rising crime rates. He emphasized that the police cannot be solely blamed for all social issues. The IG stated that the police are committed to fostering community-friendly policing and maintaining a positive environment.
To combat crime, funds are being allocated to police stations, and officers with strong reputations are being assigned responsibilities. Memon reported a noticeable decrease in crime and corruption following budget increases for police stations on an experimental basis. He noted that police in other parts of the world are not subjected to the same level of criticism.
The comprehensive security arrangements for the arrival of 46,000 guests, including the spiritual leader of the DawoodiBohra community during Muharram, demonstrated to the world the department’s capabilities. Memon also pointed out that the Sindh Police works 12-hour shifts and is planning to recruit 25,000 new personnel.
This recruitment will not only reduce duty hours but also enhance the officers’ capabilities and efficiency.
