A crucial meeting chaired by IG Sindh, Ghulam Nabi Memon, was held to address the issues of drug prevention and the eradication of drug mafias. The session saw participation from key figures, including Additional IG CTD, the provincial head of the Anti-Narcotics Force (ANF) Brigadier Umar Farooq, and senior officers from the Special Branch, Crime and Investigation units, as well as all the DIGs, SSPs, and SPs from across the province. During the meeting, Brigadier Umar Farooq provided a detailed briefing on drug smuggling, sales, distribution, chemical production, and prevention efforts within the province. The briefing highlighted a concerning increase in the use of synthetic drugs produced from various chemicals.
These synthetic substances, such as ice, crystal, and other designer drugs, are increasingly being manufactured locally and are often disguised as everyday items like sweets, chocolates, energy drinks, and vape products. The briefing underscored that synthetic drugs are 75% more harmful and dangerous than traditional narcotics. These substances are often distributed through unregistered courier services, with the proceeds being used for money laundering and terrorism. The use of synthetic drugs poses a severe threat not only to society but also to the future of young people. IG Sindh emphasized the need for collective action against this social menace. He called for a strong and coordinated effort under the Regional Inter-Agency Task Force to combat synthetic drugs.
He directed that information on drug mafias be shared effectively between agencies and that a list of non-compliant courier companies be compiled. He also urged that both the police and ANF work together to develop a strategic approach to tackle drug trafficking. A follow-up meeting will be scheduled to finalize the future course of action, with a focus on reinforcing collaborative efforts and strategies against drug mafias.
