ISLAMABAD  – The federal government has summoned a joint session of both houses of Parliament today.

The political analysts have speculated that important legislation may take place today.

The government seems inclined towards passing important legislation, which is why numerous bills are being introduced in the current sessions of the National Assembly and Senate. Among them, the most notable is the bill to increase the number of judges in the superior judiciary.

In the federal capital Islamabad and federal institutions, Saturday is typically a holiday, but this time, sessions of both the National Assembly and Senate have been called for Saturday as well.

The political experts suggest that the purpose of holding the session on Saturday is to pass some crucial laws, while the Minister of Law has stated that the government is not introducing any constitutional amendment tomorrow.

In light of the anticipated significant legislation, the Senate Secretariat has issued a notification for the session, directing the Senate offices to open at 11 a.m. today.

Opposition leader Maulana Fazlur Rahman has clearly stated regarding the legislative process that he is opposed to any form of extension.

On the other hand, the ruling coalition lacks the two-thirds majority required for a key constitutional amendment.

However, if the government aims to pass legislation, it remains to be seen how they will secure the necessary numbers.
