ISLAMABAD – Two of the Pakistani flavored frozen food giants Walls and Omore have been slapped with Rs75million fines over deceptive marketing.
The stern action from Competition Commission comes after a complaint filed by Hico Ice Cream, as the company accused M/s Unilever Pakistan, which markets “Walls,” and M/s Friesland Campina Engro, which distributes “Omore,” of false marketing on mainstream and social media.
The two companies were issued show cause notices by authorities as findings show that ice cream and frozen desserts under Pakistan Standards and Quality Control Authority (PSQCA) PS 969-2010 and the Punjab Pure Food Regulations 2018.
Walls maker was also slapped with Rs20 million for falsely claiming their products were ‘healthier’ than dairy ice cream, as it opposed Section 10(2)(c) of the Competition Act.
The commission order also referenced cases from neighboring India, U,S and Australia, where similar misbranding issues led to massive fines and other actions.
The judicial body further directed companies to remove all misleading advertisements from digital platforms and ensure proper labeling of their products.
